Summary

Well, this started with a silly idea and got quickly out of hand. Way out of hand!

Sauce complète

Materials

  • 1 x woodplate of 510x390x5 mm ( I use poplar plywood. And metric units!)
  • 1 x sturdy cardboard of the same size.
  • Colors: black, white, red, organge yellow, green and blue (or any other combination of your choice). I use wood stain and acrylic. Mother of pearl white, Multi Glitter Flakes and if wished glow-in-the dark powder for the horn. You may or may not apply some varnish as finish
  • 2 x clockwork (HD-1688FSA, has soldering latches for external power supply, sweeping)
  • white and black Filament (I always use PLA)
  • wood glue and contact glue

You may change wood and cardboard thickness according to your preferences and your laser cutter. Make sure your clock's rod is long enough to fit through wood AND cardboard!

Cultural considerations

Depending on your cultural background you may want to mirror your unicorn. For example, English and German tell the minutes before the hours (a quarter to nine) while French and Italian start by telling the hour followed by the minutes (le otto meno un quarto). How the Austrian tell the time remains still a mystery.

/!\ As the big minute eyeball covers/hides the protruding clockwork you can't just switch the eyeballs, you need to mirror the unicorn too. /!\

The pictured unicorn is definitely Swiss-German.

Cutting

  • Before you start cutting, make sure the holes for the eyes match your clock's rod diameter! You have been warned!
  • Be sure to save ALL the small pieces!
  • For easy coloring the front is completely dissected. It has to be glued on a sturdy cardboard.
Colouring

I usually use rags instead of brushes to apply colour. Especially if it is a water based color on an absorbing surface. They also have the advantage of being washable in a washing machine. And they are way cheaper. Use of gloves is recommended.

  • Frame: color the frame dark black. This includes all pieces 5mm wide.Make sure to also color the outer side of the outer frame!
  • Mane: color the different sections any color you like. I like rainbows! You will have to opt for your own silliness!
  • Tongue: dilute the red or/and purple stain to an appropriate shade. Test on a spare piece of wood.
  • Horn: I tried quite a lot of combinations on this. I couldn't find any ready-to-use color satisfying my expectations. The best result was achieved with a mother-of-pearl-white undercoating sparkled with lots multi-glitter-flakes before it dried. I may have exagerated.
  • You may also add some glow-in-the dark powder to your glitter. Honestly, not really recommended.
  • Teeth: white.
  • Fur: a tint of white is enough if you use poplar. If not you'll have to improvise.
  • If you want to varnish your unicorn, do it after gluing.
Gluing

Gluing must be done in a fast and continuous way. Lay out all the pieces before starting

  • Glue each "eye" on a piece of paper. The "eyes" are used as guides to correctly match the wood on the cardboard.
  • Evenly apply glue to the entire front face of your cardboard.
  • Using the "eyes" sticking through the cardboard as guides apply the unicorn's head
  • Add the outer black frame without distorting it. The outside border must overlap the cardboard
  • Add all the other pieces. With haste and precision!
  • Weigh everything down for a couple of hours.
Eye Printing and Clockwork

I used clockworks of the type HD-1688FSA. I bought them in bulk for another project as they come with soldering pads where you may add an external power supply. They have a sweeping movement and thus don't tick (unless the battery is depleted).
If you use another clockwork you will have to change parameters in the openscad file.

  • Using the black filament print border and pupils. No special settings.
  • As the eye's whites are quite flat normal printing will produce heavily tiered results. If your slicer allows it, use variable layer height or very thin layers.
  • Random seem position is recommended for the whites.
  • On my printer the minute eyes had imperfect bridging and needed cleaning with a cuter.

Once printed assemble the three pieces in following order.

  • Press the pupil in the corresponding eye. The two pupils are different, the one for the smaller eye is taller. Be sure the black and white streaks are well oriented.
  • The black outer rings won't stick by themselves and need to be glued with instant glue. Eventually back them with a thin piece of paper (80g/m2).
Assembly

  • Put the clockworks into the eye holes and fix them with the nuts.
  • Press the eyes unto their respective clockworks.
Suspension

  • Before gluing the suspension, add clockworks, eyes and batteries (NOT like in the image)!
  • Hold your unicorn up by a point above the two eyes. The eyes should stay more or less at the same height. Repeat until you found a suitable center of gravity line. Mark the point with a pencil.
  • Glue a suspension together: Use as many "O" pieces and one suspension piece needed, to get approximately to the thickness of your clockworks.
  • Glue it in place an clamp it.
Setting Time

The easiest way to set the time is to wait until 12 o'clock and just turn the clockworks as a whole into an upward position. If you can't wait that long, good luck!
