Summary

Here it is my interpretation of my favorite starship interface. I designed this HUE having in mind the greatest quantity possible of articulated features. Each arm and leg section can move independently and the head rotates freely around the lid.

It was designed for the most common 8oz jar size (2.38 in dia x 4.34 in tall) with a 58-2020 lug lid.

The arm and leg section were printed with silk gold filament and the rest of the parts were printed with black filament. I used metallic gray paint to finish the body and some red, gold and black paint to add details.

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Flsun

  • Printer:

    Flsun QQ-S

  • Rafts:
    Yes
  • Supports:
    Yes
  • Resolution:
    0.1-0.2 mm
  • Infill:
    20-40
  • Filament brand:

    XINGTONGZHILIAN

  • Filament color:

    Silk gold - black

  • Filament material:

    PLA

  • Notes:

For the smaller parts I used the lowest resolution and the highest infill (0.1 mm and 40%), this includes the shoulders, the arm sections and the hands.

For the rest of the parts I used the 0.2mm resolution/20% infill combination.

The arm sections and hands were printed at a 45° orientation so they could better resist the clicking action when assembling.

Post-Printing

Arm sections (ball joints)

The ball joints are meant to have a tight fit but depending on the extruded filament surface finish, they could require light grinding. My recommendation would be to first print a couple of section to test the fitting and grind as desired.

Bottom body assembly

For the bottom part of HUE, I used automotive glue to joint the BODY_BOTTOM_1, BODY_BOTTOM_2 and the HIPs together.

After that I applied a slight coat of bondo on the visible parts of the glued joints and grinded to a smooth finish.

Cleaning the shoulders

The shoulders are designed as a print-in-place assembly, be sure to break the inner supports and test the movement before assembling to the body. They are also glued to the top part of the body.

Covering the glass jar with the body parts

I would recommend to lightly heat the glass (warm to the touch) jar first before inserting the top part so it can easily go around the threads of the jar lid.

The bottom part should fit snuggly around the jar without any heating.
