Summary

We have always loved our Magisso stainless steel washcloth holder for the sink that we picked up at FinnStyle many years ago. The unique design adheres to the inside of the sink using very strong magnets that attach to a backer piece that you position up underneath and outside the sink wall. This means you don’t have to drill a hole to mount it, yet it is strong enough that it stays put.

However, a month ago, we moved, and the Magisso was sticking so tightly that as I removed it from the sink, even without the backing magnet, it would not come off. The rubber layer that grips the sink was degrading and tore apart as I removed it from our sink!

This is where 3D printing with flexible filaments can really save the day. After we moved, I cleaned up the part by removing the remaining rubber. I quickly designed a replacement and it’s a perfect fit.

Used TPU which is soft—not the HS (high speed) stuff which is a lot harder. I have only used Overture TPU, and it works fine on my Prusa Mini+, but any good print from a flex filament would probably work. Softer is maybe better. The original rubber was pretty squishy, but I think Overture TPU is fine here.

Post-Printing

Clean up the TPU print so that the inside is especially clean, as this is a smooth but tight-fitting part. If you removed the resin-encapsulated magnet pack to which this part attaches, put it back together using the hex screw, but put some dielectric grease on the screw hole, the screw itself and once tightened, smear more grease around the head. This will help prevent any retained moisture from getting deep into the threads and rusting.

Carefully slip the new part over the magnets and slide the edge of the part under the sharp staineless sleeve so the seam is hidden. The part should sit flush against the magnet pack and has a small recess in the middle that will accommodate the screw head that sits a little proud.

That’s it. Friction and the dielctric grease will hold it, and it will be sandwiched in with the magnets anyway.
