Summary

Convert your LOC 2.6 inch Nose Cone to a Combination Nose Cone\Altimeter – Baby Bel Cheese Bay with Removeable Sled and Bayonet Mount.

Most plastic Nose Cones are hollow and can have significant unused internal space. This modification and 3D print takes advantage of this by ADDING a Bayonet mount that accepts a Baby Bel cheese holder and altimeter sled for the upcoming WOOSH Jarosch Cup event at ECOF 2023. I designed and fabricated the following 3D printed components. Three (3) test flights have been performed and I’m pleased with the results. So here it goes.

Requirements:

One (1) LOC 2.6 in Ogive Nose cone or equivalent. The bottom or coupler end of the Cone is cut off close to the end flat.Drill three holes near the base of the nose cone for the altimeter to sense air pressure.

3D parts:

Nose_Bayonet_Female_65mm_verD.stl This part is inserted into the now open part of the coupler that was just sawed and sanded. The end with the female bayonet rings points outward. Use your epoxy of choice.

Combo Cheese holder Altimeter Sled Assembly.

Print the Altimeter_Bayonet_Male_VerB1.stl. I used support structures when printing. Test to make sure it slides into the Female mount you just glued. It will need some sanding.

Altimeter_Sled_verB.stl Sized to accept an official Baby Bel cheese and a Jolly Logic series of altimeters. This is the main piece of the sled with holes and indents have been provided to use rubber bands for quick release and secure mounting. This slides into Male Bayonet piece.

Altimeter_sled_Cross.stl This fits into the lower notch of the at 90 degree to the sled.

Altimeter_Sled_Eye.stl I added this piece to the bottom of the Bayonet Male piece to have something to grip and turn the sled into place.
FINAL: Arm your altimeter insert your cheese and insert the sled. Use electrical tape around the male bayonet and female connector to secure in place before launch.
