Summary

This is a remix of joopjoop's great air blower - https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3909678
The guard doesn't come off easily on my Ferrex 40V angle grinder (model no. FBT-CAG002) and I wanted to be able to mount/remove the blower onto/off the tool quickly without using screws or bolts so I made the following changes:

  • Designed the case to fit around the guard and lock onto it.
  • Design the parts of the casing and nozzle so they slot together.
  • Design a slot on nozzle, so that different outlet sizes and or shapes can be easily designed and printed later.
  • I designed a spanner extension so that you can tighten the impeller into place without having to use the original tool spanner at an unusual angle and risk damaging the impeller (I knocked the impeller on a couple of occasions when tightening).

It may fit other makes/models of angle grinder but you will need to check.

I wanted a blower to blow away the saw dust off my wood working tools and this is more than capable of that. The impeller is joopjoop's original, I've just renamed the file. I designed the parts to be a tight fit when fitting to the guard and pushing together. If they are loose it may lead to disaster. This angle grinder spins at 8500rpm and you should be careful when testing your build. One of the images shows what the parts will look like when the impeller blades decide they are not going to rotate in formation anymore. I'm still finding bits in my shed.

Printing:

  • Outer case. PETG, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 3 (1.2mm), 4 solid layers top and bottom. Support is only needed in three areas, highlighted in green in the image. The blue layer in the next image is all bridged (works fine) as it would be very difficult to remove any support material there.
  • Rotation lock. PETG, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 3 (1.2mm), 4 solid layers top and bottom. No support needed
  • Inlet cover. PETG, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 3 (1.2mm), 4 solid layers top and bottom. No support needed
  • Impeller. ASA, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 5 (2mm), 4 solid layers top and bottom. No support needed. I tried PETG first and had several failures when it was spinning so moved to ASA. I had a failure with ASA also but that was due to bad layer adhesion (it might have been the case for the PETG failures) and knocking it when tightening, so I upped the temperature by 20 degrees and it produced a much stronger impeller.
  • Nozzle. TPU, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 3 (1.2mm), 4 solid layers top and bottom. No support needed
  • Spanner extension. PETG, 0.2mm layers, perimeters 6 (2.4mm), 6 solid layers top and bottom. No support needed

Assembly:
Follow the images above.

  • Slot the guard into the fully open half of the guard slot.
  • Rotate the outer case 180 degrees around the guard so that the guard locates in the grooves on the opposite side of the outer case.
  • Ensure the guard is lined up with the edge of the slots.
  • Insert the rotation lock into place.
  • Install the impeller and tighten with the spanner extension.
  • Push the inlet cover fully into the groove so that it is fully home all the way around.
  • Push the nozzle on.

Disassembly:

  • Slide off the nozzle
  • To remove the inlet cover start at the nozzle opening and prize it open slightly and slide a fingernail round between the inlet cover and outer case. The inlet cover should ease off.
  • Loosen the impeller using the spanner extension and remove.
  • Remove the rotation lock by pushing gently on the edges of the three protruding sections.
  • Rotate the outer case 180 degrees around the guard and remove.
