Summary

I recently purchased some nylon mesh dust filters for PC case fans which have a magnetic backing meant to attach to a steel PC case. They work well with steel but some locations in my cases are fully plastic so magnetic items won't work (unless I affix using tape/glue or screws). I wanted to easily remove the filters for cleaning so I designed this holder. Once assembled you can slide the mesh filter in and out of one end, no disassembly required.

I have provided files for two different clearances (between the printed pieces and the filter): 0.2mm and 0.4mm. The filter is slightly loose using the 0.2mm clearance print from my printer. My mesh filters measure 140.25mm x 140.25mm x 1.6mm. Other printers/slicers/settings could affect the clearances differently.

Design notes

Both pieces, base and cover, should be printable without supports if your printer can tolerate 45º of overhang. The two pieces snap together. If necessary the pieces can be separated by hand but if you don't have sufficient finger access then insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the rectangular holes (one at a time) in the front of the cover to gently pry the sides loose. The honeycomb pattern gives the base some structural rigidity and prevents the filter mesh from being sucked into the fan. The two tabs on the bottom of the cover help align the cover to the base, they are not part of the latching mechanism. The round holes in the base are designed to accommodate #8-32 machine screws and to completely envelop the heads of the screws (typically about 2.6mm high). Longer screw heads might rub against the filter frame when sliding the filter in or out. Other types of screws might work as well.
