Summary

This is a modified version of Official_Dino55's Glamrock Freddy Head model.

Modifications to the original:

  • Added hinge hardware to the upper and lower jaw. This uses standard skateboard bearings to create the talking effect when you move your mouth.
  • Added holders for the ears to connect the floating pieces
  • Widened the jaw hole to allow the wearer to put the mask on without disassembly
  • Created eyes and eye holders which fit 44mm OD, 30mm ID 16 LED ws2812 LED rings and diffuse the light evenly.
  • Provided simple Arduino code to control the eye LEDs.
  • Resized the model to fit an adult's head snugly

Paint colors used:

  • Rustoleum Gloss Marigold
  • Rustoleum Gloss Almond
  • Rustoleum Gloss Apple Red
  • Rustoleum Gloss Seaside
  • Rustoleum Metallic Titanium Silver
  • Store Brand Gloss Black
  • Store Brand Gloss White

Finishing Tips:

I used spray primer+filler and Bondo Spot and Glaze putty before the final coats with gloss spray paint and this worked really well. Apply a thin layer of Bondo, let it dry, sand it, spray with primer+filler, and repeat until the surface is as smooth as you'd like. Make sure that the last coat before painting is spray primer for best results.

Electronics:

I used 44mm OD, 30mm ID 16 LED ws2812 rings for the lights. These are daisy chained together and controlled by an Arduino Nano. The electronics are powered by a LiPo battery with a charging circuit.

See the FreddyEyes.ino file for the simple Arduino script. This just lights all of the LEDs a solid teal color.

Jaw Hinge:

Two standard skateboard bearings are needed for the jaw assembly. Elastic bands can be attached to spring the jaw closed. You may need to play around with where you attach the bands in order to get proper movement.

Post-Printing

1. Assembly

Once all of the pieces are printed, they can be assembled with super glue, friction welding, or solvent welding. Do not insert the bearings until after painting to ensure that they do not get painted/glued in place.

2. Smoothing out the parts

Alternate between sanding, spraying primer+filler, and applying bondo until the surface is smooth and layer lines are gone. Finish with one final layer of spray primer + filler.

3. Paint the mask

Paint colors used:

  • Rustoleum Gloss Marigold
  • Rustoleum Gloss Almond
  • Rustoleum Gloss Apple Red
  • Rustoleum Gloss Seaside
  • Rustoleum Metallic Titanium Silver
  • Store Brand Gloss Black
  • Store Brand Gloss White

Paint the mask as shown (or use your own color scheme!)

4. Add the eyes and electronics

Glue the eye holders in place as shown in the rendering below, then glue the finished eyes to the eye holders.
