Summary

This is a mold for 36 mm x 41 mm paper pots, the same size as small size peat pellets. It is slightly smaller than the typical wooden paper pot makers available commercially in order to fit in trays and cups designed for the smaller size. The pots can be made by kids using recycled paper (newspaper and office paper work) and filled with soil as part of gardening / sustainability / biology / environmental science lessons. A matching soil scoop design is also included.

The lower mold can be printed in upright position with no support. For the upper mold, recommend printing inverted so there is no support in the cavity used to form the paper pot bottom. The soil scoop can be printed in upright position.

Overview and Background

This mold can be used to make paper pots as a more sustainable alternative to peat pellets, etc. The pots can be made from recycled newspaper or recycled office paper or even old notes etc. They can also be partially filled with shredded paper. Soil is added and the pot can be used to grow seeds. At 36mm the pots are the same size as typical small peat pellets and fit in gardening trays designed for those; they also fit nicely in the 2" cups for hydroponics/aquaponics (so you don't need to buy peat or rock wool based planting blocks).

Lesson Plan and Activity

Younger students (MS) can enjoy just making the pots and planting various plants in them to see them germinate and grow. Older students (HS) can use the pots and think about design of experiment and testing of hypotheses related to plant germination and growth. As the materials are low/no cost this can enable students to focus on the science.

Materials Needed

Paper. A letter size 8.5x11" paper can be cut or torn into 3 or 4 pieces 8.5" wide. They are then rolled over the upper mold. The bottom is pinched into the indentation in the bottom. Then the upper mold is pushed into the lower mold to crimp the bottom into place. Optionally, you can roll or fold the top rim to also lock it in place. See images; videos to come. If there's a super popular literary work they have to read in English class, the kids get a real kick out of it when they find it in the pots too. Mine love to see things growing out of Death of a Salesman.
