Summary

909D+ Soldering Iron Holder Adapter to be used with this soldering iron stand

My first attempt to model the holder was not going to work in practice because in the normal use of a holder of this type the hot surfaces will make contact with the holder, melting the plastic and dirtying up your tool.

The concept behind this holder is you use the mould and press to create a clay insert which fits into the holder adapter. I'm just using a basic air dry clay - which isn't high heat the way a fired clay would be but it doesn't melt, it burns and has low heat conductance. After the clay hardens, paint it with high temp paint (like Rust-oleum). Unpainted version showed

Slicing Clay Mould and Press

I tried 3 different air dry clays and found very different shrink profiles. Because of this I can't really give you the perfect models for what your experience would be. As annoying as it might be there are two options (each of which I've tried out). The clay I liked the best was Sargent 22-2000 Sculpt-it!

  1. You could print the existing models - Find that your insert doesn't fit
    a. If it's too small, pack some clay around it and push it in
    b. if it's too big, file and sand it till it fits. For me the opening that accepts the iron shrunk more than the other side of the insert. I needed to file the rest to match the diameter of the opening.
  2. Print and mould clay twice
    a. The first is your baseline
    b. The second you scale the press and mould during slicing by a percentage determined by the delta between the inner diameter of your printed SI_909DClayHolder.stl and the outer diameter of the largest measurement of the dried clay insert.

Honestly when I went the second way I still had to do a little sanding but not that much - it is a bit of a guesstimate.

Also the first one I did really did look similar to the second anyway (first try was pictured)

Post Printing

Materials

  • These models printed:
  • Some Air dry clay or oven bake clay (I liked Sargent 22-2000 Sculpt-it!)
  • High temperature paint (like Rust-oleum)
Post Printing Prep

  • Sand the press so it is smooth
    • When you pull the press out of the clay it is important the clay does not stick to it and deform your insert. I found even if it doesn't look like it messed it up but just slid the insert in the mould a few millimeters it dried differently and ended up bowed on the outside
  • Sand the sections of the mould that will fit into the guide groove of the press
  • The two pieces should push together smoothly and come apart easily
Pressing Clay

  • Take a clump of clay that seems like half the volume of the mould and roll it into a ball
  • Flatten and shape into a cylinder with outer diameter a little less then the inner diameter of the printed holder
  • With the mould on a flat surface, push the cylinder of clay into the holder and press it in till the clay is level within the mould
  • Position the press tip down in the center and gently press into the clay
  • The guide groove of the press will engage the edge of the mould to help keep things aligned while pressing into the clay
  • When you are as far as you can go easily, break off the excess clay that has squeezed out of the mould
  • Carefully clamp each side of the mould's wings to a surface with identical clamps
  • Simultaneously add clamping pressure until the press and mould are as far as they can go
  • After that I threw it in my dehydrator for a day before gently twisting and pulling the two pieces apart. It won't be cured yet, so be careful not to deform it by hitting the tip of the press into the clay
  • Put it back in the dehydrator until the clay shrinks enough to pull away from the walls and can easily be removed then back into the dehydrator a final time
Assembly

As I discussed in Slicing Clay Mould and Press, you may need to do a little work to get your insert to fit the printed holder due to different clay shrink profiles and your local environment. Once you have a good fit, paint with high temperature paint, let dry, and push into the holder for a tight fit (or if it was too small, add a little clay around the outside or glue or something
