Summary

During WWII there was concern that a shortage of Wright R1820 radial engines would lead to slower production of vital B-17s. Thus it was decided to experiment with the feasibility of equipping the Flying Fortress with 12 cylinder Allison in-line engines. A single example was built, tested very well and subsequently lost in an in-flight fire. Radial engine production was increased eliminating the concern of a shortage and the project was abandoned. The single modified aircraft, designated XB-38, was perhaps the best looking version of the B-17 ever but sadly there are no model kits of it. The few remaining resin mod kits that were made in 1/48 scale are extremely hard to find and very expensive so I decided to make my own by modifying a P-38 nacelle (the original donor aircraft) to fit my 1/72 Revell kit. The project is still in work but I will provide updates as I go. Enjoy.

Post-Printing

Some scale adjustment may be needed depending on the model used. I used Revell's 1/72 B-17G, your results may vary.

How I Designed This

I used a model by Captain_Ahab_62 "P-38 Lightning for microarmor" in Tinkercad. I cut away the rest of the airplane, trimmed the nacelle to the proper length and added the inlets on either side and the radiator intake underneath. Some putty and sanding may still be needed to match the new nacelle to the existing engine mount. Please comment any issues you have so I can adjust the design.
