Summary

A scan of a cool life-size sculpture I saw in the town of Teguise on the island of Lanzarote.

Apparently it's a statue of a man in the costume of a 'Diablete' (little devil). The title comes from the children who run in front of the diablete and often shout ‘¡Elegua, elegua!’ as apparently explained by the sculptor, a former child frightened by the diabletes and a diablete himself.

There is also the devil of Timanfaya (a nearby volcano) but I think that is something else. I was fascinated to find out that there were people living on the volcanic island before the colonisers/settlers from Europe came.

The sculpture itself is apparently made from polyester resin reinforced with fiberglass and galvanized iron to structure and reinforced inside. The exterior finish is made with iron and copper nitrate, providing durability and permanence over time. It gives a wonderful colour.

How I Designed This

Took a 4K video on my phone on an overcast (no shadows) day and then loaded into Polycam photogrammetry to generate STL.

I did try "smoothing" with blender for my own purposes but decided to upload the original scan for others who want to work from the raw scan and do their own smoothing.
