Summary

I found this tow truck in a collection of pre-loved toy cars that were brought into play for my young grandson. Unfortunately, it was missing the original towing crane assembly (photo 2). Photo 1 is a depiction of the original toy. The original jib was added to the body casting prior to the floor/chassis being riveted together. I did not want to disassemble the toy, so devised a replacement that would still pivot and make use of the spring steel finger. Image 3 shows CAD view revealing the hidden pivot detail. Images 4 and 5 show the two components separately.

The replacement consists of two components which are printed as a single assembly. It is then glued to the flat area behind the cab.

Images 6 and 7 show the end result. Note the indication of downward movement of the jib.

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Snapmaker

  • Printer:

    Original

  • Rafts:
    Doesn't Matter
  • Supports:
    Yes
  • Resolution:
    Medium layer (Luban)
  • Filament brand:

    does not matter

  • Filament color:

    Red

  • Filament material:

    PLA

  • Notes:

I printed the component with the front face on the build plate (ie layers effectively run from front to back of the truck. This appeared to give better results for the hidden clearances for the pivot.

Post-Printing

After printing and removing the support material, I formed a hook from wire (eg, a paper clip or slightly larger diameter wire). The whole assembly was then glued to the plastic 'seat' behind the cab.
