Summary

This is an insert designed to fit the game Dune Imperium Uprising plus the expansions Rise of Ix and Immortality. It supports sleeved cards*, and holds all the content from the three original boxes in the main game's box. This design interlocks many of the parts and boards to keep things from sliding around with little to no lid lift even with all the rulebooks and reference sheets.

Almost all of these models have embossed sections which can be printed in one of three different ways:

1) Use a second color to fill in the embossed area (as seen in the pictures for this insert). If your printer supports multiple materials (or if you know how to manually manage filament changes), you can import the main model .stl file and it's corresponding "_emobss.stl" file(s)† together as one part, then set the parts' colors as desired. (I've also provided two .3mf files with all the models pre-loaded in 0.16 and 0.20 settings for Bambu Studio if that is your slicer.)

2) Have no embossing. You basically follow the same steps as above, but don't select a different color for the "_emboss.stl" parts of the models. In this case, you might want to print the parts in different colors (especially for the player boxes) so they can be more easily distinguished from each other.

3) Use a "negative" embossing where material is simply omitted in the embossed areas. To print like this, ignore the "_emboss.stl" files and just print the main model files by themselves. Note that you will probably need supports for the embossed box lids. I have not printed any of these files this way and you might find the depth of the embossing weakens the printed models. YMMV.

The boxes with lids print best at 0.16 line height (0.4 nozzle) but 0.20 is OK for everything else. You really want to use 0.16 (or lower) for the boxes with lids as there are some small but steep overhangs that are supported much better by a slightly smaller line height. (Check your slice preview.) No supports are needed if you print at 0.16 or lower. Also, the two deck box models (imperium_deck_box.stl and intrigue_deck_box.stl) print with the open end "up" and the riser part should not need supports if you print them at 0.16 layer height or lower and slow down and cool while printing the overhangs.

If your printer does a decent job of ironing you might want to use ironing on all top surfaces of the models where the embossing is on a top surface. This is what I did for the models in the pictures. This really helps fill in the small holes that might otherwise be present in the filled embossed areas. There's not much point in ironing the box lids because the visible part of the embossing is the first layer of the print.

I printed these with 15% gyroid infill, but you can use 10% infill if you increase the number of top shell layers by one (or if you don't care about slight imperfections in the bottoms of the boxes). Note, however, that there is not a lot of infill in many of these models, so less infill percentage won't save you much filament. PLA+ works great for all of these.

Finally, the lids for all the boxes are friction fit and fit the bottom of their boxes so they don't get lost during play. The tolerances on these can be somewhat tight, but they came out beautifully on my Bambu X1C.

You will need to print one of most of the models, with the following exceptions:

  • print four each of player_box.stl and player_box_lid.stl (+ emboss, if desired) models.
  • the Solari and Spice boxes are the same, so print two of spice_solari_box.stl, but only one of each lid.

* I use Arcane Tinmen Matte Board Game Sleeves, which is what I designed this for. The larger cards are 92.5mm x 67mm when sleeves, and the smaller cards are 71mm x 45.5mm. Any sleeves bigger than these might not fit.
† Some models have two "_emboss.stl" files to allow for the different icons to be different colors.
