The Details…
Background
I really like the Klipsch RP-140D satellite speakers, but needed a good way to mount them. The best looking mount out there is the Bose UB-20. So, I created a mounting plate/adapter so my RP-140s could use the UB-20 mounts. This does it and works like a champ.
Notes
This took a lot of trial and error. Here are some of my miscellaneous notes in case someone wants to improve on this.
- the round mount part of the adapter plate that mates with the UB-20 can be replicated by a sphere with a diameter of 62.5mm.
- the screw that comes with the UB-20 to connect to mount arm to the speaker is mounting a M5 x 0.8 30mm screw.
- the three screw holes on the back of the RP-140D are all M5 x 0.8
- the two nail-slide mounting holes on the back of the RP-140Ds can support screw sizes up to M4.
Additional parts
Some hardware will be needed to make all of this work. This is the hardware requirements for ONE speaker:
- 3 M5x0.8 screws. Length can be 12mm-20mm. I recommend black screws
- 2 M4x0.7 screws. Length should be 16mm. These will be used to hole the ends of the plate to the speaker. They will go in head first and be tightened down after inserted.
- 2 M4 nuts to go with the screws
- 1 M5 nut to mate with the mounting screw at the end of the UB-20 (provided with the UB-20).
Instructions/Tips
- Use PETG or ABS. You will need some strength, and I just think PLA is not the right filament. I could be wrong and YMMV.
- I printed with 100% infill for added strength, it took 12 hours (0.4 nozzle) to print.
- You will only use one mounting hole for where the mount attaches to the speaker. I made two holes in the adapter so that it could be used “upside down” or “right side up”.
- You don’t need the little white ring that comes on the end of the UB-20 mounting screw.
- Before you start, on the UB-20, remove the piece that the speaker mounts to from the base plate that attached to the wall/ceiling. This will make it easier to assemble.
- First, put the M5 nut into the bottom of the plate. It should catch the UB-20 M5 screw as it is tightened.
- Next, put the two M4 screws in at the far ends in the smaller holes. Put them in so the head is downward and the nut is on top. Keep it lose. Slide these into the X holes. But don’t fully tighten them just yet. Tighten them AFTER you tighten the 3 M5 screws.
- Next, put in the 3 M5 screws (one near the mount point and 2 at one of the ends. Tighten.
- Finally, tighten the two m4 screws.
- When you attach this to the wall or ceiling, use really good mounting hardware. I ended up getting some very strong drywall mounts from the local hardware store that are designed to work in the ceiling. They allowed me to make less of a mess than the provided UB-20 hardware.
