Summary

The Feast of Fogaceiras originated from a vow to the Martyr S. Sebastião, made by the people of the Land of Santa Maria, at a time when the region would have been plagued by an outbreak of plague that decimated part of the population. In exchange for protection, the people promised, every January 20th, a procession and the offer of a sweet and thin bread, accustomed to be made for special occasions: the “fogaça”.
