Nylon bushing for Toro or Lawnboy Rear wheel problem

Summary

Both lawnboy and Toro lawn mowers are notorious for having to replace the rear drive wheel once they get to be over a few years old. The cause of the wheel gear failure is due to misallignment of the wheel on the drive gear. This occurs when the metal mounting plate that holds the wheel fatigues and bends the frame that supports it. Once this occurs, you can expect to burn out a set of wheels in one season from that point on. (It appears to be a form or planned obsolescence) Most users will either take it to a repair shop who will bend the metal back to where it is supposed to be. But this flexing the support metal just makes it weaker and it will fail more often. Or they will scrap the mower and by another one.

But the fix in this video is just a temp fix and it will fail again. The video is fixing the symptom, but not the problem. The reason, the wheel fails is a design flaw in the Toro and Lawnboy wheel mounting system. Toro mounts a wheel bracket to the metal frame and that allows it to raise and lower the wheels, but that system creates another problem which is metal fatigue on the mower's metal casing over time.

This bushing will be a permanent fix and will add years of life to your mower. (after you fix it with this busing, you should put new wheels on for the last time)

The Permanent fix is extremely simple and will cost only a few cents. Add a torsion spacer (bushing) for the wheel to ride on. I printed a nylon spacer bushing that was about 5/8 in diameter, with a center hole of 3/8 inch. The bushing is about 5/16 thick. Simply remove the wheel, insert the bushing between the height adjusting plate and the wheel bracket (This will require the bending done in this video), Make sure that the bushing hole lines up with the wheel bolt so that it will slide with the wheel. See the wheel assembly diagram for where to place the bushing. On this model the wheel bolt extends just enough to engage into the bushing, so that the spacer stays in place. Add a little silicon slide spray on the wheel adjusting plate, so the bushing slides easily when adjusting the wheel height. Note that this fixes the metal fatigue because the bushing spacer keeps the wheel at the same distance from the mount as where the bracket is. located. It simply cannot bend out of shape again. This fix should last more than 5 years.
