Summary

Purpose

To determine a (rough) elevation i.e. altitude (vertical angle above the horizontal: full range, i.e. 0 degrees to 90 degrees) of a star (or, moon) or landscape object, when it's not too windy, on land. DO NOT USE FOR THE SUN, for the sun use the HangDial.

Accuracy

Better than 1 degree, if you can hold it stable should be good to 0.25 degree or so.

How to print it

- Print flat (rotate it 90) - 0.2mm layer height - NO supports (it has two rectangular regions with built-in 'supports' you remove post-print) - Infill: doesn't matter, say 25% - White (or glow in the dark?) filament might be best for night-time visibility - 'Random' Z seam location (to stop blobs forming down one side of holes)

Slicing

You want the print to be symmetrical: Check the slicing, ensure BOTH the top and bottom are the same number of layers thick and bottom layer thickness is same as the other layers' thickness

After printing

Use pointy snippers to cut out the rectangle in the two bottom rectangular corners next to the sight triangle (refer pictures in instructions of how it should look afterwards)

Using it

Refer to the instructions file. Basically, suspend it from a string, line up the star with the tip of the triangle, and the tip of the triangle with the edge of the print; then read off the angle. Then spin it 180 and do it again, average the results.

Telling the time and establishing your latitude and the bearing (azimuth) of the star using it

Check back later for additional files to be uploaded in the future to tell you how to do this
