Summary

Who said practical prints can't be sexy?

GF agreed to let me make legs for what we believe to be an IKEA Lämplig (if anyone can confirm whether they fit a known Lämplig, please let me know). Anyway, she never said they shouldn't be human legs, so I did what any reasonable person would do in that situation.

Each leg is attached by a single bolt so nothing about this upgrade is permanent. Despite this, they feel very sturdy and firmly attached and hold a surprising amount of weight. (I haven't tested them to their limits as I don't feel like printing new legs.)

Shopping List

  • A bunch of filament (PrusaSlicer tells me about 525 grams of PLA)
  • 4 M5*16 bolts (up to 26mm should work just as well)
  • 4 M5 nuts (max 8mm side to side [S value] and 5mm thick [M value])
  • Glue (guess acetone would be nice if you print in ABS/ASA)
  • Kapton Tape, about 8-10mm wide (if you're gonna put hot stuff on it)
  • Weapon(s) of choice to defend your sexy legs against jealous friends

Printing

Check out the 3mf project files in PrusaSlicer if you'd like to steal my print settings. They were made using Dr. Lex's hacks, so please let me know if that causes any issues when using them for properly supported printers.

Please note that some parts are weirdly rotated so you have to make sure you put them flat on the bed before printing. This is already fixed in the 3mf files.

1. NutInMe

Before wasting filament on the big parts, make sure your nuts will fit. Print NutInMe.stl and put a nut in it. It should be easy to insert but unable to spin freely. If it protrudes over the edge, it's too thick. If you can't get it into the hole at all, or it takes more force than you're comfortable applying to a tall paused print, you're gonna have to tweak your print settings or the .blend file until it fits, alternatively get a smaller nut. I would not recommend going smaller than M5 without tweaking the geometry though.

2. Top

Print a Top piece and make sure your bolts go all the way down. Try pushing the Top into place on your Lämplig to make sure it fits. You may need to remove some material along the seams, especially where the metal rods cross.

3. Thigh

When printing the thigh, you have to pause at 122.5mm and insert a nut. The pause feature in PrusaSlicer doesn't work with my stupid printer so make sure it works with yours (or that you're comfortable scheduling pauses in the printer UI) before attempting this relatively big print.
That said, I suspect the M5 bolt will dig into the hole tightly enough to hold it in place even without a nut, so don't throw away your thigh if you miss the pause!

4. The Rest

Print all the pieces you need to make all the legs your heart desires. I only included parts for left legs so you're obviously gonna have to print flipped versions of most parts as well.

Assembly

1. Hot Stuff (Optional)

If you intend to put hot items on your Lämplig, I'd highly recommend attaching a few pieces of Kapton Tape under the rods to protect the legs. I didn't put any tape on the supporting rod, as I'm guessing it won't get as hot as the others.

2. Top Stuff

Slide a Top piece into place from behind, followed by a Thigh from the front. Make sure they are for the correct foot and screw a bolt through the top. Repeat for all the legs.

3. Sticky Stuff

With the thighs pointing up, coat only half a Bar generously in glue, as to avoid getting it everywhere (unless you're into that - I mean, let's be real, if you think this shit is worth more than half a spool of filament, there's no way having your fingers stuck together is your weirdest kink).
Insert the bar into a thigh, coat the other half in glue and attach a foot. Make sure the foot is correctly located and oriented. Once all the feet are attached, you may want to flip the magnificent creature over and put something heavy on it while the glue sets.

Congrats I Guess

If, for some reason, you actually print this, please post a make so I get to see it. It would make me so happy (and worried about your mental wellbeing). Let me know if you have any issues or questions so I can improve this functional piece of art.
