For children with Acute Flaccid Myelitis and other paralyzing conditions, accessing treatments can be costly and sometimes impossible. This project serves as a contribution towards fixing this problem, by creating a low cost and effort, but nonetheless effective, aid to help young children to move their arms again. With this cost, the chances of rehabilitation is almost impossible for most children. So, this device aims to increase their otherwise low chances of moving their arm again.
This device is a robotic assistive aid that helps to exercise the paralyzed arms of young children. As the most effective way to promote paralysis recovery is to consistently practice moving the affected body part, this aid aims to do exactly that. The device is a simple 4 component assembly, consisting of a longer 3D printed part that goes around the child’s upper arm and remains fixed, a smaller part that cups their forearm, a rod to serve as a hinge, and the actuator with its screws. The linear actuator is angled in a way such that when a button is pressed, it pushes the forearm casing from a ninety degree angle to a one hundred and eighty degree angle, and then back when pushed again. The mounting points for the actuator are flat and calculated to achieve this arc motion.
