Summary

Hey, yet another medieval-like lantern is here. Browsed this website, but doesn't found anything to my taste, and made mine. After four iterations i burnt out a bit and decided to upload this as milestone for this project, maybe you'll have brilliant ideas that i will include in next iteration.

My goal was to build a lantern:

Primarily designed for use in LARP, as my next character should have it
Based on medieval motif, but unique
Functional illumination, independent of inner light source
Light source inside should be removable, so i could change it, or extract for using anywhere else
That could be printed without support and without the need of extra drilling, or screwing anything.

Process:

After Fusion 360 initial design, i exported model to blender, and imprinted a dragon image in sculpting mode (otherwise lantern cap will look too bland)
Printed with ABS, because mine is dirt cheap and could be post-processed without issues.
Used acetone immersion to smooth out layers, around 15 seconds in acetone, and 24 hours of drying afterwards. (This shit is toxic and all, please use PPE)
Matte black primer 2 layers, drybrush with gold acrylic paint, acrylic lacquer, another 2 layers
Gluesticked diffuser made of tracing paper onto inner part

Notes:

Acetone immersion slightly changes model dimensions, so the bottom part shouldn't be acetone cured to keep the latches functional

Your flashlight inside should emit light in all sides, and preferably should have warm light, the warmer the better. Also, i didn't invented one holder to rule them all, so you are expected to make your own clamp for your flashlight. Or, if you wish, you can order the same one as me and print bottom version with my holder (https://aliexpress.ru/item/32992275539.html, 1m warm white)

Known issues:

The hole for my ring was too tight, so it took a bit of heating and swearing to snug it into the lantern
With my lighting source configuration, you can see individual LED's through cover, and that breaks the aestetic.
Tracing paper is too fragile as it will be torn apart wery fast. I tried to approach with a different solution using transclusent SBS filament, but it didn't worked out, because of dimensions warping after acetone immersion.
