Mechanical watches have always attracted my attention as a masterpiece of engineering. That's why I couldn't resist buying a cheap and beautiful model, equipped from a car factory.
However, they are good for admiring, not for everyday wear. But I didn’t buy them to put them on the table and forget about them.
Therefore, I decided to find a device that would wear them for me, giving me the opportunity to only admire the beautiful working mechanical watch.
After going through several options, I didn’t find one that fit my criteria: it’s not bulky, looks beautiful on the table, and allows you to see the watch in detail.

But it didn’t seem minimalist.
I had to make my own design based on the ESP-8266.
At first it was conceived as autonomous, powered by batteries. For this purpose, firmware was made for the processor, which sleeps and does not consume electricity, but only works while the clock is rotating. Several power schemes were tested. However, experiments have shown that on two 2500 MAH cells it works no longer than a week and a half, which is unsatisfactory. Therefore, we had to abandon the autonomous battery power supply - power is supplied from mini-USB.
The firmware is made for Arduino.cc and is extremely simple; it does not use the communication capabilities of the processor (WiFi). Despite its simplicity, you can configure it:

  • the number of revolutions per hour that must be made to fully wind the watch. Standard values for various watch models are 1500, 1200, 900 or 650 revolutions per day. 483 revolutions per day was enough for my watch
  • direction of rotation - it can be different for different types of watches.
  • adjust the number of engine steps so that the clock always remains in a vertical orientation when stopped.

Please note: when flashing the processor, the RST-D0 jumper must be removed!

I originally made this design without a bearing. However, the irregularities of the plastic clung to each other, which occasionally led to skipping steps and stopping the watch in a non-vertical position. After installing the bearing the problem disappeared. However, if you can ensure that the surface is treated so that they do not cling to each other, you can avoid using a bearing. In this case, use a plug.
During installation, it will be better if the bearing fits loosely into the parts.

Everything was printed from PETG with a 0.4 nozzle and a 0.2 layer. Retainer item requires supports
