Summary

There are three different kinds of thing here:
(1) An example design made from components ("Celtic Knot Cat.stl")
(2) components made from primitives ("Celtic Knot Component .stl")
(3) primitives ("Celtic Knot Primitive .stl")

Here is a set of 22 primitive shapes that may be combined into components, which may then be combined into designs.

There are 46 components provided, but you can make more by combining (overlaying) primitives. Components may be rotated and/or mirrored as needed.

Each primitive and component is based on a square base, for alignment with others. After a design is created, the base can be removed by sinking it below the bed plane in the slicer.

An example design is provided: "Celtic Knot Cat.stl"

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Creality

  • Printer:

    K1

  • Rafts:
    No
  • Supports:
    No
  • Notes:

Sink the design into the print bed plane to remove the base. The depth will depend on the scale; you can do the math ot just eyeball it.

How I Designed This

Some info for you to alter or create elements

All the work was done in Tinkercad. The size of the base square was 48mm x 48mm. Each primitive was made with the "pipe" shape at 15mm diameter with 8mm walls (so not hollow). Arc diameter was set at 16mm, except where it needed to be different. (These dimensions were chosen for "mathy" and aesthetic reasons, and were "fudged" as needed)

A Tinkercad negative ("hole") was made to shape the ends of the "undercrossings". This hole leaves the lower half of the element uncut, so when the base is removed from a component or design, structural integrity is preserved, e.g. an interconnected knot will not have disconnected pieces at undercrossings.

To create a design (see the "Celtic Knot Cat.stl" file), I made a palette of components. For each "cell" in the design, I chose the appropriate component, copied it, rotated and or mirrored it, and placed it into the design. (I sketched the design with pencil and paper first, to get the basic shapes and crossing established.)
