Summary

This tool is to be used with the original guide provided with theThermocuthot wire cutting machine fromProxxon, and allows you to cut circles. Its main purpose is to be small and easy to install (or remove). It won't compete with or replace more elaborate templates, but it just might come in handy if you have small cuts to achieve quickly or simply don't have the budget. Even if it has its flaws, I use the fence quite often, so it's nice to have a little tool that can be attached to it in just a few seconds.

This piece is small, but you can have a bit of overhang, so that you're not limited to a diameter of5centimeters.

Note:I consider this thing as awork in progress. It's far from perfect, but I plan to improve it in the future, if possible. This is the first 3D piece I have ever published, and I still have a lot to learn. There's a lot of room for improvement, but it was fun to make. - Printing:the main part should be printed lying on the side, to avoid having supports printed in hard-to-reach areas.
- Printing:I used 100% infill just because I wanted something really steady that won't bend, but you could probably go away with something above 60-70% (I didn't try).
- Using the tool:to minimize potential melting (due to the proximity to the hot wire), glue some cardboard to the inside edges of the central groove. I personally used PLA because I don't have any other type of filament for the moment. You could use PETG, or lower the temperature of the hot wire (but cuts will be slower).

Post-Printing

Pay attention to the fence wobbling and sliding!

As you may already know, the fence (or extension, as it is called in the manual) that comes with the Thermocut slides just too easily on the angle gauge, and tends to wobble even with slight lateral pressure (which occurs when cutting, as you push foam against the rail).

This tool doesn't prevent this, so once you've positioned it accurately and secured it with the clamping screw, use whatever method suits you best (tape, for example) to hold the guide to the platform. You could also use other 3D printslike this fence shimto ensure that the guide stays straight, though this will not prevent it from sliding forwards or backwards. For that, taping the guide to the angle gauge is the easiest fix.

Measuring marks

Measuring marks are not built into the 3D model, but you can easily add yours, or use the provided SVG file (the last image in the preview pictures) that you can print out with a regular printer, and glue on the top of the main part.

The distance between the center of the nail hole and the border is10millimeters. To avoid putting the hot wire against the piece (which will cause melting), the "safe" distance is about1.2centimeter, or half an inch. I acknowledge that it's not the best, I might fix that in a later version.

About loosing cutting height

Well, it's quite obvious, but as the top plate of this tool is22.5millimeters away from the machine's platform (or more, if you add cardboard),you're loosing cutting height. As I said before, other tools may be more precise or have a wider range of use, but above all, I see this object as something that can help out in certain situations.

Themaximum heightyou can achieve with this jig is about11.75centimeters (4 5/8inches).
