Summary

Play this new and unique musical instrument - a slide shakuhachi-style flute! This prototype was designed to fine-tune the length, but it's already close to the traditional 1,8 and can play simple songs. Low notes are still difficult due to air leaks around the inner tube, and this might be difficult to resolve through 3D printing alone. (The plan is to machine the final version from Delrin.) Intended as a fun instrument for kids of all ages to play that develops their sense of pitch like singing.

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Artillery

  • Printer:

As these are long, thin tubes, it's more reliable to print in the horizontal orientation, unless you're sure of no z-wobble.

Post-Printing

As this is a protype, there's no post processing on the demo version.

How I Designed This

I conceived the idea and produced a prototype (from a telescoping mop handle) about twenty years ago, when I was learning shakuhachi. The next prototype was a modified pBuzz from pPlayMusic (http://www.pplaymusic.us/pInstruments.html), which is highly recommended. Finally, OpenAi's ChatGPT helped me to develop the idea by discussing acoustics. supporting me in using Fusion 360 and Cura, as well as in ascending the steep 3D printing learning curve.
