Summary

I made this mold for a cigar ashtray. It's a simple mold, but I am proud of the end result. I put an M on it, just to give it a personal touch.

First time I printed it, the bed wasn't exactly level and had some lift. It didn't effect the end result too much, just a slight bit of deformity. The second time I printed it, I nailed the bed leveling and it came out perfect.

Post-Printing

Casting the Mold

Before casting the mold, coat the inside with something slick (olive oil, WD-40, or bees wax just to name a few). Now choose a casting material. I used cement for my end result. A variety of other materials can be used. I considered plaster, for example. Be sure to follow the instructions of what ever material you choose. I mixed mine a little thin and it still came out ok. When filling, don't fill it all the way to the brim. Leave about 1/8" of a gap from full. This will allow the mold to break away when you tap it on a hard surface. Once the mold is dry and ready to separate, just tap it on a hard surface. The little micro-ribs the mold has in it from 3D printing might make it difficult to separate, but just keep trying. If your mold breaks, you could always print another one. The mold is reusable unless you break it...

How I Designed This

Autodesk Inventor

I used Autodesk Inventor to create the model. My first model didn't have enough of a draft angle. I increased the angle to 5 degrees and that seemed to the trick.
