Summary

A mask of Hollow Knight's "Ghost/The Knight/Unnamed Protagonist"!

The original design was a bit messy, poor print settings and arrangement on the bed made it take extra time to finish. Plus one of the horns eventually snapped off because I used bolts instead of screws, and the superglue didn't hold.

This is a new version, with the horn connections being flatter and likely easier to pin/glue in place, as well as having stuff I didn't end up using, like attachments for a chinstrap, deleted.

The first attempt was pretty large. I can't find the original file, but it's over 18 inches tall at least from the bottom to the horns, when attached, and I printed it on a CR-10 with a 300x300mm bed, scaled up to just barely fit on the bed. This worked for my head size, so you'll have to adjust the scale so the bottom opening fits the circumference of the largest part of your head. I have to turn mine sideways and twist it on, but your mileage may vary.

Pictured is the original version, from 2021.

  • Notes:

Printed in four parts originally, with the two halves of the mask separately printed with the middle seam facing "up".

Post-Printing

Joining the parts

If you print the pieces as I have them separated, you'll have to combine them afterwards. I originally used superglue, but CA glue will likely be better.

Filling and Sanding

I used wood filler to fill the gaps, then wet-sanded with large-grit sandpaper to smooth everything out. If your print turns out better than mine, this might be a lot easier.

Painting

I used spraypaint.

Grey primer, then just regular white, several coats. Matte topcoat. Definitely will need toughing up if being transported regularly, as its size makes it easy to knock around. Might not be the worst thing to have some wear show on it, depending on how you want it to look.

Eyes and comfort

I never had a very well finished interior on the original, the padding was just some bare foam shoved inside to soften the part where it sits on your head. As such, it tends to wobble around a bit unless you support it with a shoulder.

The eyes are just two layers of mesh squares crudely taped over the holes, so if you come up with a better solution definitely let me know.

It's not the easiest thing to see out of, I usually just rotate it to look out a single eyehole.
