Summary

I needed to clean coins and rings found with metal detecting and come up with this design, which worked fine for several years by now, so I decided to upload & share.

The idea is simple:

Take a 140 mm PC fan and attach a weight on one of the blades to create vibration
Put it on springs so vibrations don't get into the ground
Put a food container on top, with some gravel and items to clean

The total cost of the build is in the range of 20 dollars.

It is designed for Decor Microsafe Easy Heat Round Container 800mL, which cost ~6 dollars in the nearby store. The container drops into the rounded Container holder part and has to be glued or, as I did, bound by a sticky tape.

Top fan plate goes on the top of the fan. It has pins that go into the Container holder holder.

The Bottom fan plate part needs to be printed twice. One for attaching to the bottom of the fan, another to be a part staying on the ground. I used 12mm springs from the nearby hardware store but also parametrised this part to fit other diameters. They are tight fit screw onto the pins. There are 2 versions of this part - one is more solid and the other one is lighter. I have more solid sitting on the fan and lighter version to be a ground level.

Finally there is a washer to create a space between plate parts and the fan, as the screws you are using may be too long. I used put the protective mesh that was on the fan on top to protect the fan blades from accidentally dropped items.

The power adapter is preferably on the lower current to create lower frequency vibrations. I used 500ma.

The gravel for the container can be some fish tank gravel preferably., but can be anything, like I used a rough sand for a while.

A good cleaning takes several hours and can be left overnight. It is not as rough as rotating tumblers and cleans more gently. Coins come out shiny.
