Summary

Our Scout Council revived the Klondike Derby and I thought the Scouts would appreciate a trophy for their efforts. I found a sled model and transformed it to make a small sled trophy. Next, I found a crate model (this Thing) and glued it to the sled. When I showed the Scouts organizing the event they asked what I was going to put in the crate?

I gathered an assortment of models of the things the Scouts are required to carry on their sled for the event. The crate has a flat plate and I embossed each Troop number on the top. The bottom of the crate I glued in the sled model - linked as a related project. For the Troop that won an individual award, their lid was snapped on the crate in the corresponding sled. The crate lid works best with supports to make the boards that overhanging the base have crips edges.

It worked really well and the Scouts appreciated the trophy since they all put a lot of hard work in making sleds and preparing for the competition.

I have optimized the prints to the right size to fit in the crate. Use different colors as appropriate. I did not glue the trinkets inside the crate so the Scouts could pull them out, check out the detail and then puzzle them back into the crate. The rope is a little to tall to fit so I heated them with a heat gun until they softened and pressed them slightly.

I sliced 10 models at a time so I could do all of what I needed in an hour or two print.

For the crate print, I left a thin slab above the lid to emboss with the Troop number. I found it better to emboss the slab then drop it down below the surface of the crate lid and merge the two.

The ax is printed in two pieces so I could use 2 different colors. A little cleanup and a drop of glue makes them a permanent model. Everything's else is one piece.

How I Designed This

Potpourri of models from Thingiverse

I found the crate first and the searched for models to represent what the Troops need to carry on their sleds for the competition. I performed simple splits to take the legs of the Dutch Oven and the bedroll off the backpack model to make them fit in the crate. A few details like embossing the Scout Fleur-de-lis on the bedroll made it specific for this competition.
