    I printed this with several outside layers (6-8) for durability and rigidity. This was printed on a large printer 300x300.

How I Designed This

I had issues with the weight of large spools and my extruder not wanting to/being able to pull the whole roll over. This would lead to binding and eventually no filament feeding. I tried to use several other spool holders that held them vertically, but they tended to be much to small for large rolls, or they bound up because the roll was too heavy. Also, since the roll is on top of my printer it tended to be top heavy and any movement of the printer cause wobbling.

I made this using a cheap thrust bearing to keep the weight from being an issue. It fits the standard 1kg rolls up to rolls 12 inches in diameter (3.5kg). It could theoretically take a bigger roll, but that's the biggest one I use.

For the thrust bearing I chose to simply toss the extra washers. You could deepen the channels is you wanted to put the washers in the channel to reduce the wear on the plastic. I've been through 2 full 3.5kg rolls on it and it doesn't seem to be wearing down much if any.

I got the idea from helicopter swashplates.

The bearing measures 80mm Bore 105mm OD 4mm Width.
