A range of Leica Ophthalmology microscope compatible adapters has been developed to enhance ergonomics during surgical procedures. These adapters are specifically designed for use with microscopes that have "short" heads. To achieve a neutral positioning of the surgeon's head and neck, it is recommended to use tiltable binoculars in conjunction with these adapters. The adapters are available in various sizes, ranging from 5cm to 20cm at intervals.
To facilitate customization and testing, it is suggested that certain 3D parts be printed using a local 3D printing service. This allows surgeons to evaluate different sizes and select the most suitable adapter for their specific surgical environment. However, it is important to note that these 3D printed parts should not be used for extended periods as they may become fragile and pose risks to both patients and staff.
Once the ideal-sized adapter has been identified, it is advisable for surgeons to have the corresponding part manufactured in metal by a local locksmith, using aluminum as the preferred material. This ensures durability and long-term safety during usage.
It is worth mentioning that sizes ranging from 12.5cm to 20.0cm are exclusively intended for 3D printing. If the ideal size exceeds 10.0cm, it is recommended to utilize the segmented version of the Leica adapter for the creation of the metal part. This is to prevent excessive weight, which could potentially compromise the stability of the microscope's counterweight and hinder proper positioning of the microscope's head.
One downside of using these adapters is that they reduce the visual field by around 20 to 40%. However, this is not a major issue when it comes to anterior segment surgery, as it is relatively easy to adjust to.
The development of these adapters aims to assist surgeons in achieving improved ergonomics during their daily use of microscopes. It is important to note that these adapters are intended for non-commercial purposes only and do not infringe upon any copyrights held by microscope manufacturers.
Two types of files are provided for the adapters, with the "stl" extension intended for 3D part creation and the "stp" extension intended for the creation of metal parts.
