Summary

This is my first attempt at designing a spiral staicase. The first version was an open-concept design with no integral step support on the outside, hence requiring slicer support when printing. I did not think this would print very well and I was not disappointed. (See the extent of the tree support generated by Cura - I didn't even attemt to clean it up!) Might be good for a horror story doll house?

I then added a spiral support structure to the outside of the steps and this avoided the need for print support.

The printed model is about at the limit of acceptable resolution (the scale is 1:24) but if used in, say, a Book Nook diorama, the result might be passible.

Post-Printing

Bridging less than optimal.

I used the same settings which have worked well for bridging in other models but were not very sucessful for this one. (Temp 200, speed 60, reg PLA) May have something to do with the shape of the steps (truncated cone) but regardless, pretty well each step need considerable clean up.

How I Designed This

Basic math used to lay out the steps in Fusion 360;

Chose a scale of 1:24 and thus the actual height to the top step is 4 inches.Wanted a model that could be used in "book nook" dioramas and that was quick to print (this is about 2.5 hrs at a layer height of 0.12mm). Knew I could design one that comprised individual steps but that would require assembly and perhaps some way to add the handrail. Felt the slightly degraded finished product of the print-at-once version was an acceptable compromise.
