Summary

This is a cooling system for an external blower fan (i.e. CPAP), providing 100% visibility of the print head - superb for seeing exactly what's going on during printing. Very easy to print, and best of all, the printhead doesn't have to lug around the heavy fan(s) - thereby increasing print speeds.

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Creality

  • Printer:

    Ender 3 Pro

  • Rafts:
    No
  • Supports:
    Yes

    .2
  • Infill:
    99
  • Filament brand:

    eSun (but doesn't matter)

  • Filament color:

    Any

  • Filament material:

    PLA

  • Notes:

    My printer setup:
    Layer height: 0.2mm
    Line width: 0.46
    Wall loops: 2
    Infill: 99%
    Infill pattern: Grid
    Print speed(s)
    First layer: 30mm/s
    First layer infill: 80mm/s
    Outer walls: 60mm/s
    Inner wall: 80mm/s
    Sparse infill: 150mm/s
    Travel speed: 150mm/s
    Acceleration: 2500mm/s2
    Supports: Yes (Tree auto)

    Print time: 2h37m

My printer has linear rails, but this is not required. Once printed, the duct can then only be installed on a Sprite extruder (of course).

I undersized the duct/CPAP tube fitting (i.e. the "funnel" slightly in order to ensure it fits into the rectangular opening of the duct. You might want to squirt a dab of hot glue to secure the funnel if it is too loose. Mine fit quite snugly, but I still added a thin bead of hot glue, just in case.

    Fasteners:
    Requires three M3x12 bolts.

    Positioning:
The vents need to direct the airflow about 1mm below the tip of the nozzle - no higher. The idea is to cool the filament which has just been deposited, not the nozzle itself.

    The fan:
I wasn't interested in trying to blow my workpiece off the print bed with a gale force air stream, so just re-used by 4020 fan. It works great. You might want to use a 5015 blower fan if the airflow is too weak for your purposes. In fact, you can use any blower fan you wish. All that's required in a different funnel.

    Customisation:
If you want to use a 5015 (or other) blower fan, let me know, and I'll design a new funnel to suit.

How I Designed This

I used Shapr3d to design this, and Orca slicer to slice it. A huge shout-out to Xdrakosha on the Shaper3d Forum for doing the heavy lifting on this design. He took my design ideas and did the lofting for me. Some final adjustments by me, and we ended up with the final Sprite CPAP Duct. I then added the funnels (to fit a standard 20mm CPAP tube).
