Summary

There are a number of Walabot holders/cases that assist in keeping the phone and the Walabot together while in use, but they're all phone-specific (see https://www.thingiverse.com/search?q=walabot). There's also one without a phone holder with just a center guide (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:6159576). This design aims to make the design more phone-agnostic, as well as provide center guides for the holder. Both the phone attachment and center guides are modular/optional.

There's a plain/regular version of the center guide, and a USB version. The USB version has a cutout to allow for plugging in the Walabot while in the case. This cutout was placed based on my measurements of my Walabot DIY 2. I do not know if the placement will work on other versions of the Walabot devices.

I'm sure there's going to be phones that don't work well with this, but the goal is to get it to work with the majority of phones. The back comes up about 1/3 of the height of the phone (plus a little more for the top of the circular portion) to allow for devices with protruding cameras near the top of the device. The inside edges have a slight rounding to them with indentations that run half way down on both sides to allow for power, volume, etc. buttons. There's also cutout in the center of the bottom to allow for USB plugs to connect to the phone while in the case.

The STL file I've included here for the phone holder is specific to my phone and case. See the "How I Designed This" section for the link to the original model so you can make you own phone holder (unfortunately OnShape doesn't export SCAD files for me to use the "Customizer" option in Thingiverse).

Print Settings

  • Printer brand:

    Voxelab

  • Printer:

    Aquila X2

  • Rafts:
    No
  • Supports:
    Yes
  • Infill:
    15%
  • Filament brand:

    Voxelab

  • Filament color:

  • Filament material:

    PLA

  • Notes:

I found the best quality in the Walabot and phone holders when printing them flat, mostly due to the orientation of the screws that connect the parts together. In this orientation, the phone holder benefits from having supports for the overhanging lip.

The center guides work best when printed with the guide part pointing up. The other part (the part that gets screwed to the Walabot holder) should be flat on the print bed.

How I Designed This

This was designed in OnShape. The original model can be found at https://cad.onshape.com/documents/321d33e8bba7993736f039ad/w/7d660ab7c1c2221ca5d8b104/e/b5c3cd09e6d046060ebe2d97?renderMode=0&uiState=660b76ff8b06bd5a29da9a1b

The phone holder design is sized to my Google Pixel 8 Pro with a Spigen Rugged Armor case. To adjust for your own device, clone the model into your own OnShape account, and adjust the #phoneWidth, #phoneHeight, and #phoneThickness variables. The screw holes are also based on screws I had in a mixed collection (approx. 2.5 mm or 3/32 inch). The model also has the #screwHoleDia variable to adjust for other screw sizes.
