Summary

This is ment to be a polearm simulator for uses in HEMA. originally designed for safer higher-speed sparring, its primary goal is providing practitioners with a lighter, softer and readily available alternative to plastic or rubber polearm simulators. This design

Like any polearm, practice should be done wearing proper safety equipment and, despite the low weight of the head and wearing of proper safety equipment, keep in mind that blows with a 5' wooden pole are still dangerous. PRACTICE RESPONSIBLY

Therefore, refrain from using shatter-prone or hard materials and ensure the integrity of the finished product prior to use in sparring. Also make sure the chosen material has good layer adhesion, especially for the dague.

I used 4mm thick walls and cubic infill to ensure enough structural stability so the croix can sustain the stress required by, for instance, the MS français 1996.

This design is meant for a 3x3cm square haft, historically white ash, though the provided pictures show it mounted on a 5 feet oak Bo staff with full length grain (and after being used for about a month and a half in regular practice). when choosing haft material, ensure the grain runs the whole length to reduce the chance of equipment failure (and possible injury). do not use woods like pine or plywood.

Post-Printing

hardware needed

1. flexible and durable contact cement (like LePage's Contact)
2. 4 wood screws for mounting the head
3. 4 wood screws for mounting the talon
4. (optional but recommended) 8 steel washers to go with the mounting screws
5. 3x3x152cm white ash square (beveled edges recommended) haft
assembly instructions

1. print and clean the dague on its side to have the layer lines parallelly to the flat of the dague
2. print and clean both head parts, flat-side down
3. test fit the dague and both head parts to understand where they contact
4. apply *contact cement* to the contacting areas following the manufacturer's instructions
5. **assemble one side of the head with the dague** first
6. **then add the other side of the head to the assembly**
7. **make sure there are no holes, gap or miss-alignments in the head assembly**
8. print and clean the talon
9. test fit the head assembly and the talon on your haft
10. while the head is mounted, pre-pierce holes for its screws (2 screws on each side, one above the other, spaced evenly)
11. while the talon is mounted, pre-pierce holes for its screws (2 screws on each side, one above the other, spaced evenly)
12. screw the head assembly and the talon to the haft placing the washers outside the TPU
13. done !

How I Designed This

Notes

PRACTICE. RESPONSIBLY. (yes, again. this is important)

I chose to create this design to study le jeu de la hache and allow practitioners to have access to a basic but fully functional simulator rapidly and cheaply.

I designed this Lucerne-style head to have no major sharp corners as to reduce potential injuries while retaining a somewhat historical profile. also the dague was designed with a flat to guide its flexion, so print it as per the instructions.

Though i did not use washers, i strongly recommend them.

Holes for screws could be added in the print in a future version, for now, just measure and pierce them through the TPU

Despite the talon being TPU and flexible, be caring in your thrusts with it, as it has little give.

suggested ruleset: blunt hits to the head; thrusts to the grill, bevor and armpits; grappling.
