How I Designed This

The original charging design did not suit me, since it is not convenient to use wires all the time.

For the convenience of using the tool, a dock station with a magnetic mount has been developed, which is also for charging, with the implementation of a backlight of the battery charging status in it.

Printing and processing

When developing the mold, I printed several trial 3D models that were printed on an FDM printer. They gave an understanding of what needs to be fixed in the size and location of the holes
After that, the first version was printed, it was printed a little crookedly, so I had to reprint it.
After printing and combining the parts, they were sanded to a smooth surface, the gray model on the left shows how it started.

Implementation of the indication

Initially, I wanted to use conventional LEDs and an Attiny13 microcontroller with a MOSFET control transistor for illumination. But this would not have given the result that turned out in the end.

As a result, the final assembly was as follows:
• Attiny13 microcontroller
• address LED WS2812b (9 LEDs)
• 220 ohm resistor (0805 format) (to protect the pin of the chip for the LED strip)
• capacitor (0805 format) with a nominal value of 0.1 UF (according to the power supply of the chip)
• magnetic mount with 3 contacts for information and energy transmission
• type-c connector soldered on a separate board

PCB

For the convenience of mounting SMD parts, a small printed circuit board was made.
The board design was developed in the Altium Designer program.
The board was manufactured using film photolithography technology.

Indication modes

1) Checking the contact
When connecting, it is checked that the contact has not been lost 2 times, a green light runs through and if the contact with the drill remains, it begins to indicate charging, if the contact is lost, all LEDs turn red 3 times.

2) Charging indication
During charging, all LEDs turn on and off smoothly in green.

3) End of charging
When the device has finished charging, all LEDs light up and turn green until the drill is disconnected from the dock station.

Internal improvements of the drill

Since the type-c port was originally used inside for charging, which was soldered on a common board, it had to be dismantled and a part of the board was worn off in order for the magnetic port to fit into the case.

Two pins on the desk were used for +5V and GND power supply, and the third was used to transmit information from one of the chips responsible for charging the battery inside the device.

On one of the legs of this chip, a voltage change was found that could be suitable for the implementation of all indication modes.
