Summary

Recently I was servicing our Woods brand "brush hog" PTO mower deck.
In the process I had to remove the PTO shaft shield tubes for better cleaning and lubrication of the U-joints and slide shaft.
It is one of the older (but quite common) models that uses quarter turn plastic retainers to retain the end shield cups onto the shield tubes.
Naturally, one of the retainers flew away into oblivion, never to be seen again...

A quick search revealed that it is called a "shield retainer 40" and bears the Woods part number 39022 for all models of PTO shaft that I could find.
I have seen identical fasteners on other brands of PTO shaft covers as well.

A further look showed that our local Tractor Supply does not carry them.
Nor does anyone else I can find other than an eBay vendor or two.
And what does this tiny piece of soft plastic cost?
$12 to $15... EACH.

So I designed the one included in this posting.
I then printed up several and tried them out.
They fit and work perfectly.

Please pardon the poor quality of the photos, these parts are quite small and it is difficult to get close up views.
In all three photos the printed part is on the left and the OEM part is on the right.

On these retainers the protrusions (flags) on the sides of the shaft only serve to keep them from flying outward.
They do not actually "clamp" anything.
The deep screwdriver slot is plenty strong enough for the quarter turn it takes to lock the retainer in place.

I hope this helps someone else.
Thanks for looking. :-)

  • Notes:

I used ABS to print mine and they work perfectly.
PETG would be as good or better.
And Nylon would be even better if you are able to print with it.

Print slowly to achieve good layer adhesion and dimensional accuracy.

I have included a .stp source file if you need to modify the design to fit your particular safety covers.
