Summary

Customizable key for the folding lock that came with my Lectric e-bike. It orginally came with 2 but then I lost one and didn't feel comfortable using the other without some sort of backup. So far I've printed on an Ultimaker 2+ with PET-G, an Ultimaker S3 with PLA and a Form3 with V4 resin. The key printed from SLA pretty much worked as soon as I removed the supports. The keys from filament printed flat on the print bed but will probably a pretty good test of your printer's bridging and overhang capabilities. Mine only needed some minor cleanup in the warding grooves on the underside of the key facing the build plate. The lands and ridges of the bitting were fine.

It looks like this will also work with folding locks from SIGTUNA and BIGLUFU.

Print Settings

  • Formlabs Form3
In PreForm, One-Click Print with the default settings did the job just fine. Reducing the touchpoint size of the supports will make cleanup a little easier.

  • Ultimaker 2+

    • Resolution: 0.1mm
    • Infill: 20%
    • Supports: No
    • Adhesion: No
  • Ultimaker S3
    • Profile: Engineering
    • Resolution: Fine - 0.1mm
    • Infill: 20%
    • Supports: No
    • Adhesion: No

Instructions

The bittings are measured with reference to the outer edges of the key blade. A value of 0.0 means it won't cut into the key at all. A value of 1.5 means it will make a 1.5mm cut into the blade. Therefore, measure the distance between opposite lands with a micrometer, divide by 2 and subtract from 7.5mm (the total blade width). For example if you measure 13.6mm between the lands, enter 7.5-13.6/2 = 0.7 as a bitting value. There should be 7 cuts starting from the tip and proceeding to the handle.

Also included is a STL file for a blank that you can take to a locksmith to cut.

After printing with a filament printer, run a small screwdriver through the warding grooves on the side of the key that was facing the build plate in order to smooth them out.

This being a plastic key, it's probably good for backups but I wouldn't want to use it on a regular basis.
