Summary

These are a few "fairy chess pieces" that I created to fill in gaps where I couldn't find them elsewhere.

For those who don't know, a fairy chess piece is any piece, whether historical or new, that isn't a part of the standard chess set (King, Queen, Bishop, Knight, Rook, and Pawn).

In this group are pieces that have short moves -- mainly sliders limited to half the board (4 spaces, by default), though some can only go two or three.

Note that I have not yet test-printed any of these, so issues are quite possible. Let me know if you find any, and I'll fix what I can. (Or, post successful Makes so I can see what I did right!)

Rotary Pairs

What a Bishop does diagonally, a Rook does orthogonally. These pieces come in similar pairs.

In the titles, each is listed with the diagonal half first, then the orthogonal pair. Except for the first item, they're listed in approximately ascending order by power.

Short Bishop & Short Rook

These are the same as the original Bishop and Rook, except for the limited length of their moves.

The Short Rook first appeared in Ralph Betza's Chess With Different Armies. The Short Bishop has been cited a few times, but usually for moving two squares on a small board; on a standard 8x8 board, it should move four.

Note that, while most of my pieces adhere to the FIDE guideline of the base's diameter being between 40-50% of the piece's height, this is a deliberate exception (as is the Short Queen) because of the nature of the piece.

Little Elephant & Little Tiger

The Little Elephant moves like the Short Bishop, but can also move one space orthogonally. Likewise, the Little Tiger moves like the Short Rook, but can also move one space diagonally.

These pieces both appear in the game Cataclysm, by Greg Strong. Since there also are more powerful pieces called Elephant and Tiger, I added the word "Little," which you may ignore if you're not also using the big ones.

Little Buffalo & Little Unicorn

The Little Buffalo and Little Unicorn move like the Little Elephant and Little Tiger, with the addition of a Knight's move.

The Little Unicorn comes from Peter S. Hatch's game Fantasy Grand Chess (again, without the word "Little"); I created the Little Buffalo as a counterpart.

Walrus & Dolphin

The Walrus can move up to three spaces diagonally, but can only leap to the second or third space if not capturing (it must slide to capture). The Dolphin does the same thing orthogonally.

The Dolphin comes from a Russian game called Falconry. I created the Walrus to be its counterpart.

Abbot & Castellan / Duke

The Abbot combines a Short Bishop with a Knight, while the Castellan combines a Short Rook with a Knight.

The Abbot is another piece from Adrian King's Scirocco; I created the Castellan myself, unaware at the time that Mr. King already had the Duke with the same move, but the piece works equally well under either name.

Jackal & Leon (Spanish Lion)

The Jackal leaps three spaces diagonally, or a (2,3) leap like a Zebra. The Leon leaps three spaces orthogonally, or a (1,3) leap like a Camel.

The Leon comes from the Castilian game of Grant Acedrex. I created the Jackal to go with it.

Ragtags

Some pieces have moves that, for one reason or another, only work diagonally or orthogonally; or just don't have a mate for the other direction set forth (at least, not yet).

Archer

Many games use Archers, and each seems to be different from all the others, but two things keep showing up: a two-space diagonal move, and a rifle capture along the Knight move.

Fibnif & Sniff

The Fibnif and Sniff each can move one space diagonally, or leap to four of the Knight's eight destinations: the Fibnif the ones to the front and back, and the Sniff to the ones to the left and right.

The Fibnif was created by Ralph Betza; I created the Sniff as a horizontal counterpart. (Diagonal versions just don't seem to work with this.)

Fortnight

The Fortnight has the same moves as the Fortress (see the Kirin, above), but adds a Knight's move.

This is my own creation.

Narrow Knight & Wide Knight

The Narrow Knight and Wide Knight are limited variations of the Knight. The Narrow Knight makes only the forward and backward moves, while the Wide Knight makes only the left and right moves.

Spy

The Spy is another piece that has as many interpretations as it has games that use something by that name. My version moves up to two spaces orthogonally, or like a Knight.

Round Movers

These pieces move equally well diagonally and orthogonally.

Lady in Waiting / Short Queen

The Lady in Waiting, or Short Queen, moves in any diagonal or orthogonal direction, like a Queen, but only up to four spaces.

Guard / Mann

The Guard, or Mann, moves like a King, but isn't Royal and so doesn't have to worry about moving into or out of check.

An alternate move for the Guard has it following the King around -- when the King moves, the Guard immediately and automatically moves into the space that the King just vacated. In this way, a game may have both a Guard and a Mann.

The Mann may alternately be called the Commoner; Prince and Spy have also been applied to how this piece moves.

Both of these pieces have a long history in multiple (mostly European) games.

Queen Mother

The Queen Mother can move four spaces in any direction, or leap like a Knight.

Thuamaturge

The Thaumaturge combines the moves of the Magus and Wizard (above), and so can move to any adjacent space or leap like a Camel or Zebra.
