Summary

Customizable Magnetic Build Board Brackets

Brackets of various sizes with holes for magnets for securing objects to
a metal building board.

  • My build board is a 26 gauge 12" x 24" sheet metal from Home Depot

  • Larger round magnets are 8mm dia x 3mm thick from Home Depot

  • Smaller round magnets are 3/16" (4.8mm) dia x 1/8" (3.2mm) thick from K&J
    Magnetics

  • Smaller square (cube) magnets are 3/16" (4.8mm) from K&J Magnetics

  • STLs for full size (60mm L x 75mm H), medium size (20mm L x 25.4mm H),
    and mini size (12mm L x 20mm H) brackets included

  • Other brackets can be generated with the included OpenSCAD files

Notes

  • The top level OpenSCAD file is magnetic-build-plate-parts.scad. This is
    the file you open when starting OpenSCAD or the file that you pass to
    OpenSCAD on the command line.

  • Alternatively, if you're having trouble opening
    magnetic-build-plate-parts.scad, try opening the file called
    magnetic-build-plate-parts-1f.scad. This is a flat file - all of the
    necessary files except the BOSL2 library files are concatenated into this
    single file. If you go this route, you'll also need to copy
    magnetic-build-plate-parts.json to magnetic-build-plate-parts-1f.json.

  • There is a choice of 2 top level OpenSCAD files:

    • magnetic-build-plate-parts.scad - includes the other OpenSCAD files
      that are part of this thing.
    • magnetic-build-plate-parts-1f.scad - flat file, all of the necessary
      files except the BOSL2 library files are concatenated into this
      single file
  • The OpenSCAD files use the BOSL2 library, not included here, but can be
    downloaded from https://github.com/BelfrySCAD/BOSL2. Be sure to add the
    path to your BOSL2 directory to OPENSCADPATH. For example, on Linux, do
    something like:

    export OPENSCADPATH=$OPENSCADPATH:/mnt/share/openscad-contrib

    Where the openscad-contrib subdirectory contains the BOSL2 hierarchy.

  • The brackets modules use the NopSCADlib polyholes.scad file, which is
    included here. The entire NopSCADlib can be downloaded from
    https://github.com/nophead/NopSCADlib.git. NopSCADlib is written by Chris
    Palmer. See the top of polyholes.scad for copyright and licensing
    information.
