Summary

I inherited a beautiful Reichert Zetopan optical microscope (see below), complete with bright & dark field imaging, polarized transmission, reflection, and mixed modes, multiple polarization stages, multiple light source apertures, and plenty of color and diffusion filters. The only problem was the light source - a mercury arc lamp which required quite a few Amps of current, which I was worried to power on in my house for fear of starting fires, or worse an exploding bulb due to fingerprints or decades of grease boiling off and subsequent release of mercury vapor. So I wanted to retrofit this with as close to an LED point source as possible

I used an Auxito 880 socket LED fog light or daytime running light (DRL) bulb, which you can find here. You can probably use any 880 socket-compatible light, I'm just linking to the one I used.

Print with the 880 socket cylindrical face down to minimize supports and printing time.

Post-Printing

Free from supports

Just gently squeeze and rotate in your hand. Once you crunch all the supports, they will slide right off.

File socket face outer edges for easier fit

Using a hand file, smooth and round the outer edges of the cylinder face containing the 880 socket. Don't file the socket itself - you'll want a tight fit. This will help you guide the 3D printed part into the mercury arc lamp holder.
