Summary

I volunteer for a non-profit organization that takes in donated, used vehicles that are road-worthy, but many times needing TLC to get them safe and reliable in order to offer them to people needing transportation having a tough go with finances. This is a ministry sponsored by four area churches.

Recently we were offered a black Volvo C70 convertible, and while the rear headliner clips were intact, three of the four front clips were missing. After an extensive web search, there was only one 3D solution available, and it was a flat part with little area for glue adhesion.

Due to the internal cavity, this must be printed on edge, which is why I added removable legs.

This part was measured and drawn to replicate the original, but easily produced for much less than replacement parts from Volvo or online sellers. If you have a C70 and use this design, send me a note.

I am experimenting on this. It will be my first ABS model, so I purchased an enclosure, and the spool of plastic. Temp to be around 235C with base of 100C and glue stick for adhesion. 15% fan. Slow speed. Thank goodness they are relatively small.

Update: Finally printed these in ABS. Best settings are:
Extruder temp 245 - Final temp 235
Base 105 with glue stick applied after heated
Speed 50
NO FAN.

I needed 3 clips, and ran different temps and speeds yielding 3 clips and 11 failures for various reasons.

Also, This model in ABS exhibited linear dimensioning stability (X & Y), however, it shrank in the Z direction. I measured my first print at 100% and it was much smaller in Z. This caused me to scale the Z axis only at 119.2%

Post-Printing

After printing, legs will need to be cut or clipped off back. A little sanding and the part may be glued in place of original lost or missing piece.

How I Designed This

I used Ashlar Vellum to draw and extrude this in three parts, plus the legs. I exported a surfaced IGES file and imported it into FreeCAD 0.19, where I could export it as an STL file for printing. This is my prototype, photographed and printed in PLA to verify size. Actual clips are ABS, so I will make three for the non-profit to which I volunteer.
