Summary

This is a portable retro gaming emulator I built running Retro Pie. Mainly to explore the PlayStation One library since I was a Nintendo boy growing up. It was also really fun to make.

I used the hard drive screws from the screws and standoffs set for everything in this build. The #6-32 hard drive screws to be exact.

When I built this, the total cost of these parts was about $166. So expect to spend around that if you decide to build this yourself.

Gamepad Driver Software

I wrote a driver for the gamepad that you'll need if you want to build this since all the controls are just hooked up to the GPIO pins. You can find that project here on Github.

Things You Might Not Like

I didn't use an internal battery. Instead I made a Gameboy-like slot in the back that a portable battery bank can slide into if the USB-A port lines up in the middle. I thought this would be cool because then you can swap out batteries or use a more powerful battery if you like. And just charge them separately.

This also doesn't have a power button. It just turns on if you slide the battery pack in. But the driver for the gamepad handles a proper shutdown of the Pi when you hold some specific buttons down. Then you can just remove the battery safely after.
