This is a rear frame brace for the CTC A8-W5 kit with wooden frame (~ 5 mm) with an included motor mount for the bed motor. The purpose of this frame brace is to reduce the flex in the rear board and motor mount, when tensioning the belt. It braces itself against the threaded rods in the bottom and allows for stronger belt tension.
The CTC A8-W5 is a clone of the Anet A8 and was often found on ebay or amazon as CTC A8 / i3 DIY. Here's also an example of this model of 3d printer: https://riksrailway.blogspot.com/2020/06/how-i-assembled-my-ctc-diy-anet-a8.html
There are 2 versions of this part. I have printed and tested only v1, which has worked fine the last few years. However, there was some clearancing necessary to fit the threaded rods and a few other things i didn't like. Version v1b has oblong holes for the threaded rods to allow some tolerance and other improvements (see changelog). However, I haven't tested v1b yet, since it takes quite a bit of time and filament to print and the original design has worked well after some adjustments.
The recommended print orientation is with the rear plate oriented parallel to the print bed, so the hole for the threaded rods are upright (as shown in screenshot). You might have to rotated it a few degrees to fit on the print bed. The part should be printable without adding any supports. However, there might be some sagging of the honeycomb holes, if printed without any supports (the shown part of my printer was printed without supports).
The design idea is loosely remixed from other Anet A8 back brace designs (which don't fit the wooden frame). CAD model is custom.
For the front I use on my printer:
- Tensioner: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3559791
- Front brace from this set (does not fit perfectly): https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4098737
Changelog:
v1:
- original version; currently used on my printer as shown in images
v1b:
- improved beta version; untested
- oblong holes for threaded rods to allow for tolerances
- rounded honeycombs
- slightly lowered mounting position of motor, to allow for better bed clearance
- added chamfer to mounting holes for better threading
- increased depth of mounting holes to allow for print tolerances
Print Settings
- Printer brand:
Anet
- Printer:
A8
- Supports:Doesn't Matter
- Resolution:0.3 mm
- Infill:20 %
- Filament brand:

- Notes:
takes about 4-5 hours; can add supports to avoid sagging of the honeycombs;
Post-Printing
Post-Print treatment:
- Clean holes for threaded rods with a file or by running the rods themselves through them a few times (should be improved with v1b).
- For v1: Clean and add chamfer to mounting holes with tip of Phillips head screwdriver (or other tool)
- optional: Thread a heated screw into mounting holes before final assembly to avoid splitting between layers.
