There are two parts - a support ring and a cover or retainer. The support ring bayonets on to the lens similarly to the way the lens hood attaches. The cover simply snaps onto the support ring. You have to purchase a the solar filter sheet separately. The filter sheet needs to be trimmed to fit. I trim mine to about 90mm in diameter (the smallest I'd go) using a laser cutter, but any size up to 100mm diameter will fit. Of course you can trim these films with a pair or ordinary scissors.

Having caught the Solar Eclipse bug, I purchased a lens filter designed to fit over several of my lens (or so I thought) to observe and photograph the April 8th Total Eclipse here in the Americas. When I went to try it out It was way to big and clumsy to stay on reliably. So I searched to see if others had designed an adapter for the Panasonic Lumix 100-300mm f4.0-5.6 I intended to use and found nothing.
