This is Poenari Castle, the Mountain Fortress of Vlad III or better known as "Vlad the Impaler". Vlad the Impaler was also known as Vlad Dracula. The name Dracula means “son of Dracul.” In the Romanian language today, dracul means “the devil”—drac is “devil,” ul is “the”—but it is derived from the Latin dracō, “dragon.” Vlad III was the second son of Vlad Dracul, who became the ruler of Wallachia in 1436.
In 1453, realizing the potential for a castle perched high on a steep precipice of rock, Vlad the Impaler repaired and consolidated the old structure, making it one of his main fortresses.
