Summary

Was looking for a manual "Barn Door" style tracker but didn't find one I liked.

I added a little plate on the bottom so I can rest my phone on it and use the Polar Aligner Pro app with it.

I have not tested it yet. Not sure if it's sturdy enough for long expose, but should do the job to at least track the sky without having to readjust tripod head constantly.

Distance between the hinge center and the rod center is exactly 290mm, so the rotation speed should be 1 full rotation per minute.

Needed hardware

  • 1x 1/4-20 rod. ~20" if you want to open the tracker to its full 90 degrees, but you can use a shorter one.

  • 7x 1/4-20 nut. 2 at each end of the rod, 2 on each side of the bearing, 1 to hold the tracker to your tripod.

  • 1x 1/4-20 bolt/screw to attach your ball-head. I used a 1" one.

  • 7 x 608 bearing (8x22x7mm). 2 for the hinge, 1 for the rod, 4 for the rod holders.

  • 6x M5x20mm cap screws to attach the frame parts together.

  • 16x M3x20mm cap screws to assemble the rod holders and to fix them to the frame.

  • 2x M3x16mm cap screws for the crank handles.

  • 2x M3x12mm cap screws for the phone holder.

  • 6x M5x20mm flat head cap screws to attach the bearing holders to the frame and to use
    as the hinge shaft. (25mm can be use for the shaft)

Assembly

Print everything in the files. I already added the proper count of each parts.

You can print one or two crank handle.
I went with two so it's easier if I go more than 45 degrees.

Insert the printed washers on the printed shaft for the rod holders.
This should keep the holder perfectly aligned.

Insert the bearing sleeve in the hinge bearing to keep the screws centered.

Insert the rod sleeve in the top holder bearing so the rod stay centered in it. Put one nut on each side of the bearing to keep it locked in place.

Put two nuts and jam them together at each end of the rod
Try to align them to be able to fit the crank handle.
