Summary

My obsession with the ZBoard Fang (later known as the Ideazon Fang) continues. I previously posted a PC game control pad which was inspired by my ZBoard Fang and Biocode's Eyetooth keypad. Since getting further into 3D modelling and printing, I have come up with a closer copy of me Fang. Further inspired and informed by custom MK's work copying a Merc Stealth keyboard replacement, I've taken a step further on making a viable copy of my Fang.

With minor changes to the key layout, here is my most recent iteration.

The basic design includes a cover and base which house a hybrid keyswitch plate. The plate has insets for the keyswitches and holes for the leads. It is hardwired from underneath and will use QMK software to operate. The plate is built to support the switches; some of which have to be trimmed to allow them to fit closely enough to better approximate the spacing of the original Fang. The switch leads extend about 1mm below for the wiring. It's tight but doable. The body has five main pieces. A shell, a base, and a 3-part keyswitch plate. Keyswitches used are the Gateron low profile reds (KS-33). The keyswitch plate is glued together with cyanoacetate glue. The plate is attached to the base with M2 screws and the base and shell attached with M3 bolts and insert nuts.

The base has alignment pins for the plate, a zip-tie slot to hold the cord, and two 5.5 x 10.5 mm through-holes to anchor folding legs that I haven't designed yet.

Keycaps are provided with inset labels that I've filled with craft paint and sanded down. I've also included copies without labels if you want a cleaner look. I've considered using dye sublimation labels but for now it's a bridge too far.

The photos show the base, shell and switchplate all printed using FDM and keycaps done with resin. It cal all be easily done in FDM with a bit more post-processing.
