Post-Printing

The big clean up

This is where the work begins. Straight off the printer it looks like the image below.
Carefully remove the supports taking care not to break any of the finer details of the handrail.
Then with a sharp hobby knife remove the remaining blobs and stringy bits.
Finish with a light sanding with 1200 grit wet and dry.

How I Designed This

Why?

I needed a simple bridge for my model railway layout and this fitted the bill. I checked out Internet images of these bridges which come in all shapes and sizes, and set about designing one of my own from estimates of sizes derived from knowledge of handrailing and heights of people and a general comparison of how these known sizes give clues to the unknown elements such as the depth of the plate girder.

Then there was the filament material to consider. I started with PLA and the design was at a fair representation of true scale. It was far too fragile for what I needed. Originally I printed the model upright but this led to the posts snapping across the layer.

The second attempt was made with larger posts than true scale and putting a hole through them to thread some wire through for the rails. This did not work as desired and the posts were increased in size a little more. It was at this point I changed the orientation of the model on the build plate from vertical to horizontal. This last move and the change of filament material to PETG meant I had a model that could stand up to the rigours of the clean up process.
