This project, developed at Cleveland Metropark, introduces middle and high school students to freshwater stream quality monitoring and macro-invertebrates. By creating these artificial models at a larger, tangible scale, students can learn to identify and classify species when in-stream field investigations are not possible.

Overview and Background
Macro “BUG” Models enhance Watershed Science Lessons
Aquatic macroinvertebrates are common freshwater organisms that lack a spine and are large enough to be seen without a microscope. They are often the nymph, or immature stage of insects such as mayflies, stoneflies, or even beetles. Because some species are more sensitive to water pollution and environmental factors, such as dissolved oxygen and pH, they are frequently used as a proxy to monitor water quality in streams and rivers.

Lesson Plan and Activity
Freshwater
Understanding characteristics of our local freshwater systems is essential to their better management. The aim of this lesson is to get up close to a local stream and learn how it functions as an ecosystem. In this project, students visited Cleveland watershed stewardship center and learned about the stream ecology. This can be mimicked in a classroom where the teacher talks about local freshwater resources and metrics used to measure their quality such as dissolved oxygen and pH.
Macro invertebrates
In this section, educator introduces students to aquatic macro-invertebrates that are common in freshwater and the fact that some species can be used as proxy to monitor water quality because they are more sensitive to water pollution and environmental factors. This is where 3D prints come in handy as they are at a larger and tangible scale, that students can touch and observe closely.

Materials Needed
3D prints
If the lessons are performed in a classroom, it I can be fun to create an artificial river using cardboard and distribute the 3D macros where stream is "cleaner".

The objective was to digitize 12-15 preserved macro-invertebrate specimens collected from northeast Ohio streams and provide STEM content support.
