Summary

This is a set of parts to make a pocket fountain pen based on the Hongdian #5 nib unit and either 3.4mm bore cartridge or converter.

The longer barrel will fit a converter, while the shorter one will only work with the cartridge. I have tested the fit of Hongdian 3.4mm bore cartridges, Hongdian 3.4mm bore converter, and the Jinhao 3.4mm bore converter with spring fill.

Included in the files are variations on barrels and caps, everything is inter compatible, but the short barrel with long cap is a bit hard to open, as only a few mm of barrel is left out of the cap. However, some may prefer the long barrel with short cap for looks.

When you print, for a full fountain pen, you need 3 parts, the section, a barrel, and a cap.

On some materials, the nib unit is very snug going in, roll a bit of sandpaper up and just clean the inside of the opening down to the threads. Adding a bit of silicone grease after that down to the threads can help. On other materials, there is no issue.

I print with a 0.4mm nozzle and 0.08mm layers. Although I have printed without support, a support for the lip of the section is helpful.

For the section, I place on the bed threads facing up. For the barrel and cap, I put the flat part on the bed, no supports on those parts have been needed.

I also print with a textured bed, and really like the finish left on the top of the cap and end of the barrel.
